The Wise Fool

In a previous post, I shared the school picture from my 1985-1986 Dixie College yearbook. My sophomore photo is much better, I think:
I will spare you other photos from the yearbook. Besides, I didn't try out for Mr. Dixie when I got back, so there isn't too much to show how dorky I was. I still was dorky. I fear I still am dorky.

Just this one row of photos brings back great memories.

My dear friend, Lisa Belliston, was a blessing to me that year. One of the many things she did was identify a very cheap apartment for me in Bloomington Hills. She was co-valedictorian, along with Brad Esplin, also a good friend and president of Sigma Gamma Chi fraternity that year. And Del Beatty, also a dear friend, is one of the most talented and energetic leaders I have ever known. He is currently the Dean of Students at Dixie State. He was also my roommate at Boys State when I was in high school.

In spite of my foolishness, I think I learned some wisdom as a second-year "wise fool". And one lesson I learned from the aforementioned friends is that it is a good idea to be with and learn from great people. Sometimes it hurts a bit to realize where you are weak. But, it is better to learn lessons from great people than avoid them.

My ultimate value is not in comparison to them. I must admit there were times I felt pretty mediocre to what I perceived as their excellence. My only valid comparison is to my old self, and these terrific people helped me improve and become a better person. Some of their greatness rubbed off on me, and I'd like to think that there were some worthy things from me that rubbed off on them.

Hang out with greatness.
