Mark Twain popularized the phrase "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." I will now use some recent statistics in the AFC and NFC championship games that prove ... nothing about BYU football. But I thought it was cool.
First, Joshua and I have been cheering for the New Orleans Saints a lot this year, mostly because Taysom Hill is a phenomenal do-everything player. He throws. He catches. He runs. He blocks punts. He returns kickoffs. He even pancakes defenders when he plays at the tight-end position and blocks for other running backs, which is impressive to watch. Even though the Saints lost Sunday, Taysom Hill had a two-yard TD reception. Way to go, Taysom!
In the next game featuring the Kansas City Chiefs vs. the New England Patriots, the leading tackler for both teams were former BYU players.
Kansas City's Daniel Sorenson is the defensive general and led the way with 11 tackles and 3 assists, and had one interception. Watching the highlights, I think my favorite play, though, was when he knifed through the defense on a fourth-and-1 and stuffed the running back for a loss. Way to go, Daniel!
Kyle Van Noy led the Patriots with 8 tackles and 2 assists, and two of those tackles were QB sacks. Highlights showed him to be the typical Van Noy I remember: a defensive player who seems to be everywhere. He hounded the QB all night, but also covered and tackled receivers. Way to go, Kyle!
Go Cougars!
