The last few days got really busy as Andy Johnston, bless his enormous and wonderful heart, recently offered to install carpet in our home, using rolls of carpet that apartments no longer want. We have carpet installers at our home right now (Carpet Diem!) putting carpet in the living room and the hallway and three bedrooms upstairs.
[Note: I wrote this yesterday but didn't have time to send it! The carpet upstairs is in!]
I am excited for the carpet, which we really really really need and appreciate. Prepping is a pain, of course. Its a lot like moving to a new home without going anywhere.
Check out our Family Room. Cozy! |
I asked Susan three times last week if we should paint. She said no. But yesterday while I was at work, she went to Sherwin Williams paint store and got some wall-patching product. Uh oh.
On the way home she wanted boxes. Most places don't keep boxes around anymore, so you need to show up after 10:30 PM and ask. (WinCo told me to come by at 1:00 AM.) But, the State Liquor Store loads in the afternoon and destroys the boxes around 8 PM, so after three tries I got some boxes there. (No word yet on who in the neighborhood saw me frequenting the liquor store.)
When I finally arrived home, she asked me to "check" the 12-year-old paint in the garage to see if we could use it. I determined we could use it as a poisonous molasses substitute. However, I could use the paint on the can to get some new stuff mixed up for us at Home Depot.
So, after 9 PM we started painting, and also moved the last dressers and clothes and piano. Ugh.
I will preface this next paragraph by stating clearly my eternal devotion to the wonderful and amazing Susan Benge. It should be known, however, that hasty patches of fist-sized holes in walls are probably impossible to do correctly. The lumpy-bumpy wall patches don't look very good. I might have to redo those. They aren't the worst patches in the world, but the patching isn't layered properly or wide enough, and Andrew couldn't find proper sandpaper in my work room, so it just ain't great.
The next thing I would like to mess up is leveling the basement floor. Saturday, I had Jeff Stringham over to see if we could attempt using some kind of self-leveling cement to fill in the Great (Basement) Depression, or as we insiders call it, the GBD. We will see if that is a possibility before we carpet the basement.
I would like to send a kudo to Andrew, who jumped in last night to sand, move furniture (including the piano), paint, etc. He stayed up too late--and Susan and I stayed up wayyyyy too late--but he did a great job and volunteered to help. Thank you!
He also performed in the One Act plays last week and did a fine job in his play. I didn't quite understand the point of the play, but when I learned that it was written after the third day of rehearsals was already complete and the student stayed up until the wee hours of the morning just to get something out there ... well ...
...
Now Wednesday morning and I haven't sent the email yet. More Kudos to Andrew who helped me move a bunch of furniture back (including the piano), and helped put together our beds.
The new carpet feels like real carpet, and the pad makes it pleasant to walk on. I didn't realize how bad it was.
How about a before and after pick?
Maybe you can't see much difference. But there is!
