A Turtle Walks Into A Bar ...

... and orders a glass of water. The bartender complies, and the turtle takes the water out on its back. The next day, the turtle, looking stressed, again walks in and again orders water. This repeats for a few days. Finally, the bartender asks if the turtle would like a beer or something instead. The turtle snaps back, "Not now! My house is on fire!"

My dad told me that joke today. I thought it was a good one to get back into bar joke titles.

I am sending this email because I wanted to tell Elder Benge a couple of things but then realized I might want to let everyone know.

First, you probably saw a short Marco Polo video of Rachel receiving an award. You probably understood what was happening, but just in case you didn't (and as Elder Benge wouldn't know), Rachel received the outstanding orchestra student of the year award in the CDJH 9th grade awards ceremony. She has worked hard, and deserves the accolade. She received a nice wood award for her efforts.

Miriam found a small basement apartment in Clearfield with a friend and is moving out this week. It is cute, and she gets her own small room, which helps her tremendously.

I learned a little something about Memorial Day this week, which started out as Decoration Day:

On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month. "The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land," he proclaimed.

The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn't the anniversary of any particular battle. ...

... For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date General Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. The change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.

I hope y'all are enjoying the lightning, thunder and hail this weekend! We certainly need the water. I hope inflation and shortages ruining any plans. Tomorrow, we plan to visit my parents and find the grave markers for Susie's Grandpa Nielson and Grandpa Kenworthy, both of whom served in WWII. We might take a look at Devin's tombstone as well, as I haven't seen his grave since it was put in place.

Take care and God speed!
