Obituary for Devin

I was asked to write the obituary for my dear brother, Devin. My parents and brother, Kirk, had some good suggestions for me. I even called his former spouse, Racheal, to see if she wanted to be included in the "survived by" section. She did, but not if Katy objected ... and when I contacted Katy she felt like Devin would have preferred that not be included.

Anyway, here is my brief obituary, along with photos that Kirk sent to possibly included in the slideshow on the mortuary web site:

Perpetually smiley, affable and fun, Devin James Benge, age 37, passed away in his sleep at his home in South Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 16, 2021.

The youngest child of Wesley Howard and Ruth Walker Benge, Devin was born December 5th, 1983, in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. He graduated from North Sanpete High School and earned a degree in medical laboratory science from Weber State University. He was working toward a master’s degree.

A cosplay enthusiast, Devin was the founder of Nerds from Nowhere and thoroughly enjoyed comic books and superheroes. He loved nature and being outdoors, and was well acquainted with much of Utah’s wilderness. Most of all, Devin wanted to be—and was—an excellent father and husband.

Devin is survived by his wife, Katy (Christensen); one-year-old son, Franklin, and soon to be born son, Oliver; both parents; four sisters and three brothers; and a host of nieces and nephews who will miss his cheerful banter.

In 1999, Devin was diagnosed with a cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM). In an effort to prolong his life, he chose to discontinue many of his favorite activities. After years of relatively good health, this personal time bomb took his life.

A viewing will be held June 26th from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at 1627 Cadbury Ln, Springville, Utah. A funeral service begins at 11:00 a.m. at the same location.

Update: the obituary is posted
